What kinds of work will I do in my WI and SI classes?

When you read terms like "writing intensive" and "speaking intensive," what's the first thing that comes to mind? If you said "papers and speeches," you're not alone; that's what most students expect. But there's far more to writing and speaking than writing essays and giving traditional speeches.

Here's a list of some of the projects WI and SI instructors have assigned:

  • Researching and writing a project about community issues
  • Writing a script for a short movie
  • Debating important issues
  • Writing short responses to films, videos, and texts
  • Collaborating with classmates on group oral presentations
  • Creating parody Web sites
  • Facilitating classroom discussions
  • Performing scenes from a play
  • Rewriting famous speeches as texts
