Writing and speaking are powerful tools for learning that benefit you as a student and citizen. Writing and speaking will help you master complex topics in your advanced classes, understand the issues at play in political debates, and navigate complicated problems at work and home.
Composition scholar Joan I. Hawthorne found that students taking WI classes "believed that they had learned to think, to remember, to understand, to analyze, to integrate, and to evaluate. Writing assignments became a means through which students could try on the role of a professional, learn how to apply theory to practice, and imagine themselves as full contributors within a professional community."
