Commuting and Living Off Campus

Safety and Security

The personal safety of commuter students is a concern of the University. The university offers an evening parking shuttle which runs a continuous route with designated stops at or near blue emergency phones around campus. A bus arrives at each stop every 12 minutes. The service operates from 5:30 pm until 1:30 am. University Police, upon the request of any student, will provide a safety escort to anywhere on campus Sunday through Friday from 5:30 pm until 10:30 pm. The Police also provide a safety patrol escort (walking or vehicular depending on Police availability) Sunday through Friday from 10:30 pm until daylight. As a commuting student, you should also be aware of your personal safety as you are driving from home to the campus. Students are encouraged to use common sense, keep car doors locked, and be aware of your surroundings.

Living off campus can present new concerns about home security. The following are a few rules of thumb to follow when securing your home.

  • Keep doors and windows locked
  • If you have a sliding patio door, keep it secure with a "charley bar" or a wooden dowel or broom handle cut long enough to wedge into place and keep the door from moving.
  • Stop your mail and newspaper deliveries and keep a light on when you are away for more than a weekend.
  • Be general wih your answering machine message.
  • Keep all valuables out of view fom windows
  • Keep curtains or blinds closed at night.
