General Information

What Is Days of Caring?

Days of Caring is the most encompassing national service effort -a contagious phenomenon of helping others that anyone can join!

Days of Caring began in 1997 as a way for United Way donors to have hands-on experience with the agencies they support with their financial contributions.

The Office of Campus Activities & Programs serves as the hub for our Days of Caring effort at UNCG. However the Office of Leadership & Service Learning also supports the initiative. The 2009 Days of Caring effort runs from September 21-October 21.

Who Takes Part In Days of Caring?

You, anyone and everyone! Students, faculty, staff and community members ban together. In 2008, hundreds of thousands people across the country including over 4400 UNCG Spartans paused to take action and change the lives of needy neighbors, hurricane victims, and children at home and abroad. According to the Volunteer Center of Greensboro, nearly 100 nonprofit groups and schools benefitted from over $81,000 worth of community service hours in 2008.

Days of Caring, formally known as Spartan Helping Hands and Make A Difference Day, provides UNCG students, alumni, faculty, and staff an opportunity to volunteer their time by serving the needs of the Greensboro community and organizations like yours! Understanding the important role service plays in our community (i.e., "Service" is our University motto), we are asking for your help and support.

Any and every one can participate in Days of Caring! Young and old, individuals and groups, anyone can carry out a volunteer project that helps others. Your project might be as ambitious as collecting truckloads of clothing for the homeless, or more interactive like volunteering to feed the homeless, or as personal as spending an afternoon helping an elderly neighbor or relative. Invite your friends and family to help. Involve as many people as you can. That's what Days of Caring is all about! Local and campus media, will feature volunteers and their projects in articles and photos.

When Is Days of Caring?

The 2009 Days of Caring effort runs from September 21-October 21: And you are invited to help us launch this cooperative, Triad wide college and university effort!

How Can You Help?

Spread the word! Invite your family, friends, classmates, colleagues, roommates, residence halls, student organizations, and religious affiliations, - anyone and everyone you know to volunteer for Days of Caring between September 21-October 21!

Your project can be as large or as small as you wish! Look around your community and see what needs to be done. Looking for help finding a project idea to help your community? Check out our Days of Caring Group Project Options (PDF) or visit http://olsl.uncg.edu/explore/service/

What's The Time Commitment Involved?

Volunteer needs vary as will the projects participants design or sign-up for. A "good rule of thumb" is to budget 4-6 hours of a given day. Be sure to include travel to and from the site, orientation and debriefing, as well as the service itself. After serving the Triad community, we suggest you close the day with reflections and a celebration of service. Want To Do More? How About Helping Plan And Lead Days of Caring Efforts?

Join our Steering Committee! Help us plan and lead the 2009 Days of Caring efforts! Your role, as a Steering Committee member, would be to attend irregular meetings, determine community needs and service opportunities by contacting area agencies and reporting back findings, promoting and recruiting participants for Days of Caring 2009. Planning and implementation meetings run from August - November. Meetings will begin in bi-weekly intervals and then transition into weekly meetings the closer we get to the actual Days of Caring period. Feel free to join the Steering Committee anytime. It's never too late! For more information, contact Ashleigh Musyt in the Office of Campus Activities & Programs.
