Rho Lambda

Rho Lambda, the National Sorority Leadership Recognition Society, was founded at the University of Miami as a local group in 1962 under the direction of Dean Louise P. Mills. In 1974, Rho Lambda received permission from the National Panhellenic Conference (NPC) to become a national organization. By the end of 1975, there were 20 chapters nationwide. In 1987, Rho Lambda became international, colonizing at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. In 1998, Rho Lambda began admitting all sorority women based upon minimum requirements; hence, membership was not limited to only members of the NPC organization.

Membership is invited by the Panhellenic Council in the fall semester. Applicants must meet the following criteria to apply:

  1. Women who in the opinion of the membership of Rho Lambda have displayed outstanding leadership, ability, and loyalty throughout their years of sorority affiliation shall be eligible for membership.
  2. Nominations for membership may be submitted to the current members of Rho Lambda, by the president, and the local advisors of each national sorority.
  3. An overall grade point average of a 2.50 (on a 4.0 scale) is required for membership.
  4. Only active members in their junior or senior year are eligible. They must have been initiated, active members of their sorority for at least two full academic terms or semesters.
  5. A transfer student will be eligible for membership after one term or semester on the university or college campus.
  6. A candidate must be a regularly enrolled, full-time undergraduate student in the university.
