COLLEGE OF ARTS & SCIENCES ADVISING

New Transfer Students

Welcome to UNCG! We are excited to have you here. We are the College of Arts and Sciences Advising Center, and we will be advising you for the upcoming semester!

First things first! Activate your UNCG email account, as that is how we will communicate with from now on! If you have not already activated your account, you can do so on the UNCG Information Technology Services web site.

You must do academic advising to get your advising code and register for classes.

For information on transfer credits, please see the Transfer Student Information page on the UNCG Registrar's web site.

The Information Technology Services department at UNCG offers a FREE app for your iPhone, iPad or iTouch that allows you quick access to many campus resources.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are my advising options?

You can schedule an in-person advising appointment or you can request an email advising appointment.

What is the difference between email advising and in-person advising?

In-person advising involves you coming to our offices and sitting down one-on-one with an advisor. You will go over courses to sign up for, your transferred credits, your major requirement and general education requirements. Your advisor will show you how to read your UNCG Degree Works Repoort and how to use UNCGenie to look up and register for classes. You will then register for classes with your advisor. Your advisor will give you an advising record and your advising code.

Email advising requires much more self direction. It is a great option for students who live far away and cannot drive to our offices or for students who feel comfortable using UNCGenie and doing research on how to look up class requirements and register for classes. You will be expected to send your advisor a list of classes you want to sign up for and what requirements those classes meet (in other words, why you are signing up for that class).

Here is an example of the initial email you will get if you choose to do email advising:

Because of the nature of our conversation, and the fact that we'll be communicating about information that falls under federal privacy laws, I will in future send my responses to your UNCG iSpartan email, so please make sure that account is active and that you are checking it regularly.

You indicated you were interested in email advising.  Here's how that works:

  1. You'll need to generate a Degree Works Report.  The instructions on how to do so are here.
  2. The Degree Works Report will tell you what general education markers you may need (if any) and what courses are required for your major. Everywhere you see a red "no" is a requirement you still need to fulfill.
  3. Working from the Degree Works Report, make a list of courses that you would like to take or requirements that you would like to fulfill.
  4. You can search this course search by Subject in order to find your major classes, or by Course Category to find Gen Ed courses.
  5. Pick 4-5 classes and work out a tentative schedule. Send this to me via email and I can review and advise you on your selections.  Also send a list of current courses you're taking (if applicable).

Then we'll go from there.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

How do I make an appointment?

To set up an in-person advising appointment, call us at 336 334 4361. We are open 8am-5pm, Monday-Friday.  We will begin advising on December 1and will do advising through December 19. Please have your calendar ready when you call to make an appointment. You will also need to have your student ID and your UNCG email address (which means you need to activate that account before calling). We have 4 advisors to see around 300 students, so pick a date you can be sure come in on. If you skip or repeatedly reschedule appointments, you will have to wait for SOAR to do advising. You are responsible for knowing how to get here, parking with enough time to get to your appointment, etc.  Please be on time for your appointment.

Directions and parking to our office, 103 Julius Foust Building (not Mary Foust, that is a different building), can be found here. There is metered parking in front of our office, so bring change!

To set up email advising, simply email us at casa@uncg.edu from your UNCG email account with your student ID number and major and let us know you want to do email advising.

I’ve made my appointment! What next?

Make sure you have all your transcripts, AP and/or IB scores in to the Registrar’s office.  You can reach their office at 336 334 5946.

Make sure you have signed up for SOAR.

If you want a campus tour, contact admissions at 336 334 5243.

If you have questions about Financial Aid, contact their office at 336 334 5702. Check out their website.

If you want to go ahead and start looking at classes to sign up for, check this out. This is not required, but will help you get an idea of what classes you will be able to sign up for.

Steps to take before your advising appointment
  1. Make sure your computer accounts are activated
You must be able to log in to UNCGenie in order to register for classes.  If you have not activated your default accounts, do so here.  If you’ve activated your accounts, but forgotten your Genie pin number, click Forgot Pin.  If you’ve activated your accounts but receive an error message after clicking Forgot Pin, visit here.
  2. Review your Degree Works Report
The instructions on how to find your Degree Works Report are in your registration guide (pg 8), or you can watch a video walking you through the process on the Students First website, here.
  3. Read your Degree Works Report
The Degree Works Report will tell you what general education markers you may need (if any) and what courses are required for your major. Everywhere you see a red "no" is a requirement you still need to fulfill.   Keep in mind your credits may not be completely transferred yet, so don’t panic if you think you should already have credit for a class. You can address that at your advising appointment.
  4. Determine the requirements you want to complete
Working from the Degree Works Report, make a list of courses that or would like to take or requirements that you would like to fulfill.
Keep in mind that since it is possible your transcripts have not yet been processed, not all of your transfer credits may yet be showing on your evaluation.  Your list is therefore preliminary and may change once your credits are articulated, so be flexible.
  5. Search for classes
Information on where to find the Class Schedule course search is here. (see bottom of page for a step by step guide). You can search this course search by Subject in order to find your major classes, or by Course Category to find Gen Ed courses.  To find course descriptions and pre-requisite/co-requisite information, view the Undergraduate Bulletin (http://web.uncg.edu/reg/Bulletin/Current/).

This page is also helpful: Registration Frequently Asked Questions.
Go to the Course Search directly here (make sure it is set to fall 2013).

  6. Work out a tentative schedule
Pick 4-5 classes that meet requirements and that you are interested in taking.  Again, please be flexible as course availability in some categories will be limited.  You will go over this schedule with your advisor when you meet

If you have any specific questions about these instructions, feel free to call (336-334-4361) or email (casa@uncg.edu) us, visit the CASA webpage or visit the Students First FAQ webpage. We are very excited to have you at UNCG and look forward to working with you!
