College Counseling/Student Development in Higher Education

Statement of purpose

This area of study prepares counseling professionals who want to provide meaningful support to college students as they seek to maximize their personal and educational development. Graduates are prepared to work both with students experiencing normal developmental transitions and students in crisis, at an individual, group, and programmatic level.

Program overview

In addition to the common core of helping skills and professional preparation courses, coursework for the College Counseling/Student Development in Higher Education track includes perspectives specific to the developmental issues of this diverse and dynamic population. Current events, pertinent research, diverse settings in which counseling and development work can occur, and trends in higher education and student development are discussed. Core courses include an examination of theories of college student development, an in-depth review of the needs of contemporary college students, and administrative roles and structures that are pertinent to student development work at an organizational level. This program of study meets the requirements for applying as a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in North Carolina.

Potential career areas

Students in this track are working towards careers in college counseling centers, academic advising, disability services, multicultural affairs, career services, leadership and service learning, orientation, college admissions, residence life, and student activities (among others). Internship and practicum experiences in university student development offices help tailor the program for each student's interest areas.
