School Counseling

Statement of purpose

This area of study prepares counseling professionals who want to work in K-12 school settings providing counseling and support services that positively impact the academic, career, and personal/social development of students. School counseling students also learn how to work with relevant stakeholders (teachers, school administrators, parents, and community members) to develop a comprehensive school counseling program, as well as the importance of being effective leaders and advocates for their success as school counselors. Graduates are prepared to work in public and private schools upon graduation, and are is eligible for the "S"-level license from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction upon completion of their MS or MS/EDS plan of study.

Program overview

In addition to the common core of helping skills and professional preparation courses, coursework for the School Counseling area of study includes learning and applying foundations of school counseling, as well as how to develop and implement a comprehensive school counseling program. Trends in school counseling, working as social change agents within schools, and facilitating the holistic development of all K-12 students are discussed throughout the curriculum. Knowledge and skills regarding school counseling trends, techniques, interventions, and services are emphasized throughout clinical experiences, particularly as part of the required 600-hour internship, which spans 2 consecutive semesters to mirror a school year.

Potential career areas

Students in this track are working towards careers as elementary, middle, and high school counselors, as well as school counselors placed in non-traditional settings (such as international schools, Department of Defense schools oversees, or schools with various grade ranges). Internship and practicum experiences in at least two of the three common school settings help prepare students to work in a variety of settings upon graduation.
