Residential College students enjoy the relaxed yet stimulating learning environment in Grogan Hall, the same building in which they live.
UNCG re-energizes its commitment to the residential experience with an enhanced focus on living-learning communities
Based on a wealth of national data, seconded by local experience, residential learning communities with a strong academic core enhance learning and reinforce other retention measures. UNCG's Ashby Residential College, for example, the oldest living-learning community in North Carolina, boasts a freshman-to-sophomore retention rate that is typically about 13 percentage points higher than that of the rest of the university.
With these and many more outcomes in mind, next fall the Exploratory Studies: Pre-Health Living-Learning Community will provide 100 UNCG freshmen the opportunity to learn more about the academic majors in and career paths for a wide range of health and human services fields. Under the guidance and support of a team of UNCG faculty, staff and peers, program scholars will live together in Reynolds Residence Hall throughout the academic year and take integrated courses in which the instructors and students of the two courses are in dialogue, sharing readings, assignments and co-curricular activities. Collaborative partners within the School of Nursing, the School of Health and Human Sciences, and the Office of Undergraduate Studies provide Exploratory Studies scholars with an integrated academic experience as students explore their academic strengths, major options and career interests; discover connections between different courses, majors and co-curricular activities; and connect with other individuals and resources in the UNCG community. The university's aim is to produce a greater number of highly prepared graduates for the critical health and human sciences field.
Also set to open in fall 2011 are three additional living-learning communities, including one centered on Sustainable Entrepreneurship. Housing about 60 freshmen and sophomores in the new Jefferson Suites residence hall, this program provides students studying entrepreneurship the opportunity to immerse themselves in a creative and collaborative “think-tank“ environment. Residents will learn to build transferable entrepreneurship knowledge and skills for business success in a dynamic global economy that is increasingly restructured by sustainability concerns.
