Weatherspoon Art Museum celebrates 70 years of collecting

This year, the Weatherspoon Art Museum marks seven decades of building a collection with a national reputation and presenting thoughtful exhibitions and educational opportunities. To celebrate, the museum hosted “Weatherspoon Art Museum: 70 Years of Collecting,” an exhibition featuring 100 highlights from its nationally recognized permanent collection. Among the artists represented were Willem de Kooning, Paul Manship, David Smith, Louise Nevelson, Alexander Calder, Ann Hamilton, Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol, Cindy Sherman and many others whose work collectively narrates the histories of modern and contemporary art. Anniversary events have included a gallery talk, a public tour, community day and an artist talk with Tom Otterness.

Fans of the Weatherspoon can stop by the gift shop or the campus bookstore to pick up a beautifully designed and illustrated hardcover or paperback book that includes a history of the museum with full-color reproductions of the 100 noteworthy works of art from the collection. Included are thoughtful essays written by art history faculty members, museum curators and director Nancy M. Doll.
