Chancellor Linda P. Brady
Dr. Linda P. Brady became the 10th chancellor of The University of North Carolina at Greensboro on August 1, 2008. Previously she served as Senior Vice President and Provost at the University of Oregon, Dean of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences at North Carolina State University, and Chair of the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs at the Georgia Institute of Technology.
At UNCG Dr. Brady has led efforts to establish a mixed-use village designed to recapture the residential character of the university, launched an academic restructuring and program review process designed to guide future directions and investment, and positioned intercollegiate athletics as an important element of the student experience.
Under her leadership UNCG has won numerous awards and recognitions, including designation by Forbes as a “Best Buy,” inclusion among Princeton Review’s Best 376 Colleges, recognition by the 2012 G.I. Jobs List as a “military friendly” school, named a campus sustainability leader in the College Sustainability Report Card 2011, and recognition as one of the nation’s most affordable public universities by the U.S. Department of Education.
The University of North Carolina at Greensboro has been recognized by the Education Trust as one of only five U.S. colleges and universities serving low-income students well, and is on the short list of American universities that have closed the gap between graduation rates for black and white students.
Dr. Brady is a member of the Board of Directors of the Greensboro Partnership, a founding member of Opportunity Greensboro (a collegiate-business partnership), a member of the Greensboro Rotary, and a member of the Board of Directors of the United Way of Greater Greensboro. She chairs the 2011 Campaign for the United Way of Greater Greensboro.
She is a native New Yorker and the first member of her family to attend college. She earned her undergraduate degree from Douglass College, a master's degree in political science from Rutgers University, and her doctorate in political science from The Ohio State University.
From 1978 to 1985, Dr. Brady was an analyst with the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Defense, a period covering both the Carter and Reagan administrations. She served as defense adviser to the Negotiations on Mutual and Balanced Force Reductions in Vienna, Austria and held the same position during the Negotiations on Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces in Geneva, Switzerland. Dr. Brady also supported the negotiation and implementation of prepositioning and logistical support agreements with members of NATO and with countries in the Middle East and Persian Gulf. She received the U.S. Department of State Superior Honor award for her work in support of the theater nuclear forces program.
Dr. Brady was the Olin Distinguished Professor of National Security at the United States Military Academy in 1991-92. She has served on the board of the U.S. Army War College. Dr. Brady is a two-time recipient of the Outstanding Civilian Service Medal from the U.S. Department of the Army. She served as Senior Fellow for Arms Control at the Carter Center of Emory University from 1986 to 1988.
Dr. Brady is married to Gustav “Steve” Heyer, a retired Army officer. She has two adult stepsons and three grandchildren: Stephen Heyer and his wife, Suzanne, live in Richmond, VA with their children Alyx, Megan and Andrew Casey, while Michael Heyer lives in Chicago, IL.
