H1N1 Flu Update

Dear Faculty, Staff and Students -

I am writing to provide you with a current update on the H1N1 influenza virus (Swine flu) and its impact within UNCG.

We have been notified that a UNCG student has been quarantined in the hospital with a possible case of H1N1. Student Health Services staff are in contact with the student's doctors as well as the Guilford County Health Department. The student's close contacts have been contacted by Dr. Eldaliz Fernandez, our Medical Director, and have received appropriate treatment by the health services clinical staff. Laboratory tests are being analyzed and we expect to have the results within the next 24-36 hours.

If students have particular concerns or begin to experience flu-like symptoms, they should contact the Student Health Services for an appointment to be examined. It is important that we all remain calm. This is a case of flu (albeit a new strain) and universal precautions are all that are needed at this time. In other words, wash your hands frequently. Information about this virus continues to be available on the UNCG home page at www.uncg.edu or Student Health Services at www.uncg.edu/shs/flu/.

The University's Emergency Preparedness and Response Team (EPART) continues to monitor the situation and are prepared to respond if needed.

I will keep the University community updated on the status of this situation as more information becomes available.

Sincerely,

Linda P. Brady
Chancellor
