Sad News Regarding UNCG Student

I am saddened to announce that a member of our student body, Kyle Harris, died Saturday. Kyle was fatally shot during an armed robbery at the Fayetteville pawn shop where he often worked on weekends.

He was a 19-year-old sophomore majoring in criminal justice at UNCG. He hoped to go on to law school, friends told the Fayetteville Observer. They described him as a hardworking and thoughtful young man who did kindnesses for others without being asked and who looked after his mother.

Dr. Jenifer Hamil-Luker, one of Kyle's sociology professors, had this to say about him: "From the moment he walked through my classroom door, with his crew cut and sunglasses on the back of his neck, Kyle Harris made his presence known. He was confident, articulate, inquisitive — the kind of student professors hope to have in their classes. The last time I spoke with Kyle, before he headed off for a tour of law schools, we talked about his ambition to work in the criminal justice system.

"It pains me greatly that instead of becoming a champion for justice, as he aspired to be, Kyle was a victim of a senseless, violent, cruel act that took him away much too soon. Kyle's family and friends, the UNCG community, and all the lives he would have touched have experienced a tragic loss."

Professional counselors from the Counseling and Testing Center located in the Gove Student Health Center are available to talk to students in need of support, and to visit classes to talk about campus resources. Students living in a residence hall may also choose to seek out support from a professional staff member responsible for their building.

The UNCG Student Government Association is discussing plans for an on-campus memorial for Kyle. I will share those plans with you at a later date.

Please read the profile of Kyle that ran in today's Fayetteville Observer by visiting http://www.fayobserver.com/articles/2010/11/07/1046206?sac=Local.

Join me in keeping Kyle, his friends and his family in our thoughts and prayers.

Sincerely,

Linda P. Brady
