UNCG’s Response to the Current Economic Situation

10/21/2008 10:02 AM
Subject: UNCG’s Response to the Current Economic Situation
To: The UNCG Community

I know you are all aware of the challenging economic times facing our state and the nation. Indeed, a recent article in the Wall Street Journal noted that three quarters of the states are anticipating economic hardships for 2009 or 2010 and at least 20 states have already made cuts to public university budgets. We have been treated very well by the General Assembly over the past several years, but North Carolina unfortunately is not immune to the financial challenges facing our country.

As a result of North Carolina’s revenue shortfall, we have been directed to cut our budget by 3%, which is in addition to the nearly 1% cut that was imposed at the beginning of the fiscal year. I am hopeful these will be the extent of the cuts, but it is very possible that we will be asked to absorb further cuts this year or next. I have asked the provost and vice chancellors to work with their respective divisions on the best way to absorb these cuts. They will also be in touch with strategies for better resource management and cost containment.

As you are also well aware, we have mobilized to write our next five-year strategic plan, and we will forge ahead as planned. A recent article in the Chronicle of Higher Education noted that a tight economy “forces an institution to focus on what is most important.” This approach is consistent with our strategic planning process which will create a value driven, outcome-based, transformative strategic plan (as opposed to an operational plan).

I appreciate your understanding, support, and cooperation as we work through these challenging economic times. We remain committed to our core missions of teaching, research, and service. I appreciate all that you do on behalf of this outstanding university.

Sincerely,
Linda P. Brady
Chancellor
