Remarks at Press Conference Introducing Kimberly S. Record, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics

September 25, 2009

Welcome to UNCG's first Blue & Gold day of the 2009-10 academic year—and a red-letter day in the history of UNCG athletics.

I am pleased to announce that we have a new leader of Spartan athletics—a woman who will take our program to the next level and enhance the visibility and reputation of The University of North Carolina at Greensboro in the process.  Effective October 1, 2009, Ms. Kimberly S. Record will assume the position of Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at UNCG.

Kim, we are delighted to welcome you to UNCG and the Spartan family.  I look forward to working with you in the coming months and years to build on a history of excellence at UNCG.  You will have my full support.

Kim has extensive experience in athletic administration.  She served as Senior Associate Director of Athletics at Florida State University from 1995 to 2008, where she was a member of an executive management team overseeing a 19 sport, $50 million intercollegiate sports enterprise. From 1984 to 1995 she served as Associate Director of Athletics for Administration and Associate Director of Athletics for External Operations at the University of Virginia.

Kim has the leadership, administrative, marketing, and fund-raising skills essential to bringing greater visibility and success to Spartan athletics. She has hired and mentored head coaches and senior administrators.  She knows how to build programs and facilities.

In Tallahassee she was the primary contact with the Tallahassee-Leon County Civic Center, where Florida State plays basketball.  She also knows the Greensboro Coliseum and the Greensboro Community.  She will play a critical role in the movement of UNCG's men's basketball program to the Coliseum this November.

Kim Record has demonstrated her commitment to the welfare of the student-athlete.  She shares UNCG's values, including the importance of success in the classroom as well as on the court, field, or pitch.  At both Florida State and UVA she worked to enhance diversity and gender equity.

This very competitive national search drew 125 candidates.  Kim Record quickly rose to the top.    I spoke personally with a number of her references, and the comments ranged from "best administrator I ever worked with" to "a woman who is passionate about athletics and committed to the welfare of student athletes" to "a leader coaches trust and respect" to "a woman of integrity with an exceptional work ethic"  I don't think you can get any better than that!

I want to express my appreciation to David Perrin, Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, who chaired the search committee, and the faculty, students, alumni and members of the community who served on the committee.  I also want to personally thank Ken Carrick and his colleagues at Coleman Lew & Associates, an executive search firm in Charlotte, NC for the outstanding support they provided during this process.  Rod Wyatt stepped in last July to serve as interim director of athletics.  He has done an excellent job and I want to thank him for his leadership.

In one of her many meetings during the interview process, Kim remarked that before she came for a visit one of her sons told her "don't forget to smile, Mom" while she was on campus.  I know Kyle and Josh are here today along with other members of your family—and Kim, today is indeed a day to smile.  Please join me in welcoming UNCG's next Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, Kim Record.
