The MALDI-TOF-TOF mass spectrometer (4700, Applied Biosystems) is used for the analysis of proteins, oligonucleotides and small molecules. For proteomics experiments that require separation, we employ a plate spotter (Probot, Dionex) interfaced to a capillary HPLC (HP1100, Agilent Technologies).
The ion trap mass spectrometer (LCQ Advantage, Thermo Finnigan) is equipped with electrospray and nanospray ionization sources. It is coupled to both conventional flow and capillary HPLC systems (Agilent Technologies). This instrument is used extensively for analysis of complex, non-volatile samples such as biological fluids and plant extracts.
A GC-MS with electron ionization and a quadrupole mass analyzer
(Shimadzu QP2010S) is used for analysis of volatile species. This instrument has NIST database searching capabilities for compound identification.
