Student Learning Goals for the B.A. Degree

By the end of the undergraduate degree program, majors in Classical Studies should be able to:

  1. read, translate, and interpret prose and poetry in Latin or Greek
  2. recognize and scan accurately at least one common poetic meter (e.g., dactylic hexameter, iambic trimeter, elegiac couplet)
  3. identify basic genres of classical literature
  4. identify major classical authors and place them in their literary and historical context
  5. identify major historical figures of ancient Greco-Roman world and place them in their historical context
  6. write a competent and properly referenced research paper on a topic in their major field
  7. display detailed knowledge in one of the four concentrations in the major (Latin language, Greek language, Classical Archaeology, Classical Civilization)
