Student Learning Goals for the B.A.
Degree
By the end of the undergraduate degree
program, majors in Classical Studies should be able to:
- read, translate, and interpret
prose and poetry in Latin or Greek
- recognize and scan accurately
at least one common poetic meter (e.g., dactylic hexameter, iambic trimeter,
elegiac couplet)
- identify basic genres of classical
literature
- identify major classical authors
and place them in their literary and historical context
- identify major historical figures
of ancient Greco-Roman world and place them in their historical context
- write a competent and properly
referenced research paper on a topic in their major field
- display detailed knowledge in
one of the four concentrations in the major (Latin language, Greek language,
Classical Archaeology, Classical Civilization)
