Lysistrata at Wake Forest UniversityLysistrata, translated by Jeffrey Henderson, directed by J.E.R. Friedenberg.
Performances: Evenings: Sept. 29 30, Oct. 4, 5, 6, 7 at 8 p.m. Matinee: Oct. 8 at 2 p.m.
A devastating war has dragged on for 20 years and one woman is determined to bring it to an end - no matter what it takes. What is that one special thing that men want from women? If you withhold this long enough, how can they keep their mind on the war? Calling together women from all sides, she wins their reluctant support for her daring and extreme plan: conjugal strike and simultaneous occupation of the treasury. Typical of Old Comedy’s frank (even obscene) discussion of religion, politics and sex, this contemporary translation of Aristophanes’ greatest work is both a battle of the sexes and a strong argument for peace. Think twice about bringing the kids! Henderson’s translation is immediate and vulgar in its imagery and language, but faithful to Aristophanes’ original.
