UNIT 1 Amos & Lang, These Were the Greeks Here is a rundown on how we will conduct the preparation & quizzes for the unit.
Preparation Day
Quiz Day
- Professor Q & A: each student must bring in at least one question to be asked of Prof. Wharton in class. (10-15 minutes). (Further questions may be addressed to me via email: wharton@uncg.edu).
- Students should do readings for all assigned chapters & bring in at least 4 questions about the chapter for which they are questioners. Groups should decide individually on the best way to divy up questions -- by page numbers, topics, etc.
- The group should discuss and choose what it considers to be the fairest, toughest, “teaching” questions: those that will be challenging but not just “trivial pursuits.” The group will decide which three of each students questions should be used in the quiz. Prof. Wharton will select some of the best questions to be on the exam.
- Once the questions are chosen, students should spend the rest of the period quizzing each other on the remaining 4 chapters for that session. Each student should take a turn asking, and answering, questions. Prof. Wharton will be available for consultation with all groups during this time.
- Each student must submit all of his or her questions to Prof. Wharton via e-mail (wharton@uncg.edu) at least one business day before the next quiz day.
- The e-mail must adhere to the following format. SUBJECT LINE: CCI 201/CHAPTER ??/GROUP NAME/YOUR NAME. The e-mail should then contain your name (again), then the three questions selected by the group for use in the quiz, then the other 2 (or more) questions that you came up with.
- 4 respondents will be chosen for each chapter quiz, each respondent from one of the teams NOT making up questions for that chapter quiz.
- Each of these groups of 4 will be asked questions as time allows. Team and individual scores will be kept.
- 5 chapters will be covered each quiz day.
- The team with the most points at the end of the unit will be allowed to opt out of the unit test with a grade of “B.” In case of a tie, the tied teams will choose their best players to compete in a tie breaker.
