CCI 502: Aeneid

    Vergil, Aeneid (proem)

Arma uirumque cano, Troiae qui primus ab oris
I sing of arms and the man who first from Troy's shores

    Italiam fato profugus Lauiniaque uenit
came, exiled by fate, to Italy and Lavinian shores,

litora, multum ille et terris iactatus et alto
the man much tossed on land and sea

ui superum, saeuae memorem Iunonis ob iram,
    by the violence of the gods, because of Juno's grudge;

multa quoque et bello passus, dum conderet urbem
he also suffered much in war, until he could found a city

inferretque deos Latio; genus unde Latinum
and bring his gods to Latium. From this came

Albanique patres atque altae moenia Romae.
the Latin race, the Alban fathers, and the walls of high Rome.

Musa, mihi causas memora, quo numine laeso
Muse, tell me the reasons: what wound to her divinity

quidue dolens regina deum tot uoluere casus
made the queen of the gods drive a man famous

insignem pietate uirum, tot adire labores
for devotion to ______? so many disasters, to undertake so many toils?

    impulerit. tantaene animis caelestibus irae?
Can divine minds be so angry?
