LYRIC POETRY

OFFICE HOURS:  WF 12-12:30, T 11-12 and by appointment.  You can always catch me before and after class too.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: The main objective of this course is to help you improve your Latin reading skills.  By the end of this course you need to be able to:

 

1) translate select passages from the poetry of Catullus and Horace at sight

 

2) describe the important themes in the poetry of Catullus and Horace

 

3) analyze poems of Catullus and Horace for meaning, word choice, syntax, and rhetorical figures among other things

 

4) demonstrate competency in scanning a variety of lyric meters

 

5) describe the relationship between the poetry of Catullus to that of Horace

 

GRADES:  Your final grade will be determined as follows:

ARTICLE REVIEW:  Each student will be assigned an article on Catullus or Horace to read and write a review of.  You will also give a short oral report on your article to the class.  The written review and the oral report will each count for one half of your grade.  Details to  follow.

TEACHING:  Each student will be the teacher for one of the assigned readings from Catullus.

TESTS:  There will be two exams given during the semester.  The tests will be given on September 14 and October 24.

FINAL EXAM  The final exam will be on Tuesay, December 12 from 5-7:50.

OTHER INFORMATION

Attendance and Class Preparation:  I expect you to be in class and well prepared every day.  If you miss more than 2 classes for any reason, you will be dropped from the course.
