Apollo and Dolphins

This red figure vase by the Berlin Painter shows Apollo sitting on a
tripod, holding his lyre and wearing his bow/arrows on his back. The
wings symbolize Apollo's journey over the sea, perhaps to the far-off land of the Hyperboreans. The
dolphins on either side of the tripod may allude to Apollo's epithet
"Delphinios". See the below for a view of the entire vase. |
