About the Program |

UNCG in Rome 2012 will run from 9 May—1 June. The majority of the course takes place in Rome, with a three-day trip to Naples, Herculaneum and Pompeii. When in Rome, students and faculty rent apartments at the Residence Candia (http://www.residencecandia.it). Located in the Prati region of Rome, the Residence Candia is a mere ten-minute walk from St. Peter’s Square and one block from a Metro stop. The apartments are fully-equipped suites, with air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi and limited linen service. There are supermarkets and laundromats nearby. In Pompeii we stay at the Hotel Villa dei Misteri (http://www.villadeimisteri.it/), a well-known hotel that caters to student groups and is only several hundred meters from the archaeological site. Our itinerary follows the development of Rome from the Etruscan period into the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Sites to be visited include the Roman Forum, the Colosseum, St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museums, the Tiber Island, Monte Testaccio and many others. We also visit the National Archaeological Museum in Naples, and in Rome we’ll be visiting a number of non-classical monuments and oddities, such as the Aventine Keyhole, and we will encounter several of Rome’s “Talking Statues.”
