Mary D. Murray Scholarship
Mary Deese Murray graduated from the Women's College (now UNCG) in 1932, and spent thirty-three years teaching high school mathematics and English. After retiring in 1965 she devoted her life to various civic and community activities in Hickory, NC. She was a loyal supporter of UNCG, and a gift through her estate continues to support UNCG students who are majoring in the mathematical sciences (Mathematics or Computer Science). Note that before applying, students must have completed and filed a current FAFSA with the UNCG Office of Financial Aid (form available here). The STAMPS (Science, Technology, and Math Preparation Scholarships) program is an NSF-funded scholarship program to increase the number of graduates in majors from the following UNCG departments: Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Computer Science, Geography, and Mathematics and Statistics. Scholarships are competitive, but can potentially provide a substantial portion of your education expenses. UPE, the International Honor Society for the Computing and Information Disciplines, has a scholarship that is open to active members of UPE, and provide from $750 to $1,500. Any active members of UNCG's UPE chapter are welcome to apply. Applications must include a brief essay, transcripts, and a letter of recommendation. 2011 scholarship applications are due June 15, 2011, and more information can be found at the UPE Scholarship web site.
