Job Trends in ComputingBackground: I found this great new website, indeed.com, that is basically a search engine for job postings. OK, that's not so interesting, but what's cool is that it has a "trends" link at the top so you can see how the number of job postings are trending for any topic over time. And to make it even better, you can put in multiple topics to compare keywords. Here are some that I played around with - these should all be live links to pull current info from indeed.com and embed it here, so if these aren't working for some reason let me know and I'll double-check the embedding code. First: "Computer Science" over timeExcellent - demand is increasing for Computer Science graduates. You can see the recession and job stagnation in 2009, but we've had some pretty good increases since then. Note however that this doesn't give absolute numbers of job postings - just the percentage of job postings that mention Computer Science. What about C++ vs Java vs C#?Hmmmm.... C# just recently overtook C++, but seems to be flattening out lately. And demand for Java is still over twice as high as either C++ or C#. Android vs iOS?Ouch. That's gotta hurt for the Apple fanboys (and girls). Seriously, even more impressive than Android overtaking Apple is the phenominal growth over the past year. We definitely need to do more with mobile app development in our curriculum. Other QueriesWhat else can we compare? Anything you can think of! Compare "Computer Science" to other majors (information systems, mathematics, or whatever). Compare operating systems. Compare online systems (facebook vs myspace - no real contest there). If you do something that gives a result that would be interesting to add to this page, just let me know! |
