Conflict ResolutionMaster of Arts in Conflict Resolution

The Master of Arts and Post Baccalaureate Certificate programs in Conflict Resolution program are dedicated to providing high quality, professional training in multiple conflict intervention and prevention skills such as mediation, negotiation, facilitation, violence prevention and collaborative problem solving. The programs focus on pragmatic approaches to solving personal and social problems in a variety of social settings. Students are exposed to a wide array of techniques and strategies to achieve nonviolent solution to conflicts that arise in diverse family, organizational and community environments.

The 36 hour master's program promotes a systemic perspective to the challenges facing individuals, families, organizations and communities. With an interdisciplinary commitment to social justice and human rights, we train professionals to seek collaborative, constructive and healing methods for resolving human conflict both at home and abroad. Our goal is to mold reflective conflict professionals – practitioners with a critical understanding of theory and method, as well as practical skills in cultural fluency, problem solving, and social responsibility.

Student are encouraged to explore a range of professional and community applications for their practice skills and are closely mentored and supported by the faculty.  Electives are focused in two general areas: (a) family and interpersonal conflict, and (b) workplace, organizational and community based conflict, but may be taken in both areas of interest.  Summer five week intensive electives are currently online, while other electives are offered concurrently in the residential and online formats.

The program is built on a comprehensive core curriculum of seven courses, varied electives, and flexible course schedules which allow students of all ages, backgrounds, and needs to participate in the learning process.

Certificate Program in Conflict Resolution

The 15 credit hour Certificate program prepares students for the changing nature of professions, businesses, and community services. The Certificate program is beneficial for those who have already received a graduate degree, but would like to specialize in conflict resolution as a new area of specialization. It is also appropriate for those who possess an undergraduate degree and are seeking to obtain fundamental knowledge of the conflict resolution field of study or for professionals who have already earned a graduate degree in their professional field, but who would benefit from academic study of applications of conflict resolution in their current profession.

Any earned credits in this certificate program can be counted toward the master's degree in conflict resolution, if the student applies for and is accepted to the master’s program at a later date. This is why the admissions criteria are the same for both programs. The Certificate consists of four courses from the core curriculum (excluding Mediation Theory and Practice) and one elective in lieu of the practicum experience. A maximum of 3 semester credits from graduate courses taken in other programs may be transfer into this certificate at the time of enrollment, upon approval of the course content by the Program Director.

Students may enter the Certificate program in the Fall or Spring, but should apply no later than March 30 for Fall admission. Students may enroll full or part time, taking three (part time) to six (full time) credit hours per semester. Electives are taken at the student’s convenience.

Online Program Information

The online offerings use the same readings and course materials as the residential programs. A high speed internet access (ISP) is required and students will need a webcam to participate in live chats, view and interact with class sessions, perform role plays and make presentations throughout the program. Additional technical requirements and online tuition rates are available at the Distance Learning Website.
