CATALOG DESCRIPTION:
Guidance, support and theoretical connections for students engaged in conflict resolution work in field placements. Offered in the Fall and Spring.

STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • demonstrate specific conflict resolution practice skills related to areas of interest through performance, documentation and supervision
  • document projects and case management process for practicum activities which are performed by means of a detailed practicum activity log
  • demonstrate skill levels to enable independent practice in areas of education and certification
  • evaluate individual practice performance and the strengths and limitations of specific practicum settings

TEACHING STRATEGIES:
This course supports the field experience performed by students in practicum sites throughout the community. Students will collaboratively solve practicum related challenges as a group, and engage in conflict resolution training and facilitation simulations during the class period. The instructor will facilitate discussions, explore practicum related issues that may need program intervention, and train students in facilitation and training techniques. Since the instructor is also the University practicum supervisor student feedback and group interaction is essential to the overall evaluation and performance experience. While the residential students will meet every 3 weeks on the North Campus, some exercises and all practicum related problem solving will be based on the Blackboard system and include online practicum students as well.

Preparation time for formal class trainings may be counted toward the total number of practicum hours to be completed, but there is a cap of 20 hours credit for class related training preparation.

EVALUATION METHODS AND GUILDELINES FOR ASSIGNMENTS:
To determine final grades, students will be evaluated on the following in class activities:

Class Presentation (20%)

  • discussion of assigned readings and practicum related issues with the instructor and fellow classmates weekly; this discussion is ongoing, constitutes part of your participation grade, and will require a minimum of two postings per week on the BB discussion board for both online and residential students
  • an online presentation of the goals and objectives of the student’s practicum site with assessment of the challenges and opportunities in the placement. Students will discussion each others presentations, give constructive advise, and brainstorm ideas for a successful outcome. This is scheduled for October 17.
  • facilitation of one group problem solving exercise for the entire class online; techniques may be chosen from Chapter 3, Tools for Learning in the optional text, Tool Kit for Trainers or from other sources. If you use a different source, you will need to provide handouts on BB a week in advance of the presentation so students can be prepared. This is the final project presentation scheduled for November 28.

On-Site Practicum Performance (80%)

  • in consultation with the onsite practicum supervisor, the instructor will assess the overall performance of contracted tasks and duties at the site
  • verbal assessment will be accompanied by a formal written evaluation by the onsite practicum supervisor
  • students are required to keep a log which documents all practicum related hours which are counted toward the 100 hour total; that log must be signed by the onsite practicum supervisor and  submitted for approval by the Program Director as part of the practicum requirement
  • student’s must also submit a written evaluation of the practicum site and their practice experience; this evaluation is not graded, but is used to evaluate and improve practicum placement opportunities
