UNCG’s Center for Youth, Family and Community Partnerships (CYFCP) has worked collaboratively with partners to develop two cross system Child and Family Team courses titled Introduction to Child and Family Teams: A Cross System Training from the Family’s Perspective and Child and Family Teams From the Family’s Perspective: Part Two - A Cross Systems Approach to Facilitating Family Driven Meetings. Collaborative partners formed a System of Care Child and Family Team Curriculum and Training Group which included representation from parents; youth advocates; the Department of Health and Human Services: Division of Social Services (DSS), Division of Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Substance Abuse Services (DMH/DD/SAS), Division of Public Health (DPH); Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (DJJDP); Department of Public Instruction (DPI); and universities. The group is affiliated with the NC Collaborative for Children, Youth and Families.
The curriculum development was guided by seven practice principles set forth by the System of Care Child and Family Team Curriculum and Training Group. These practice principles are listed below.
Seven Practice Principles |
| 1. Family, children, and youth are full partners. |
| 2. Planning is led by the family. |
| 3. Meeting is a safe, supportive place for all members. |
| 4. Meeting includes people who can help the family succeed. |
| 5. Plans are built around what families do well and fit with their beliefs. |
6. Members are committed to the plan and share responsibility for successful outcomes. |
7. Plans are changed when they are not working for families. |
Another course created to support the growth of Child and Family Team practice is the course titled Person Centered Planning: A Child and Family Team Approach. This particular curriculum combines the Person Centered Thinking philosophy and planning with Child and Family Team practice. Child and Family Team practice reflects the elements of Person Centered Thinking and planning and this curriculum has been designed to be the bridge between the two practices as both continue to grow across the state of North Carolina.
In addition to the development of these curricula, CYFCP has created corresponding Training of Trainers (TOT) courses for each to support training capacity building across North Carolina. The cross system courses were initially offered through DMH/DD/SAS. However, with the endorsement of the NC Collaborative for Children, Youth and Families, CYFCP will offer TOT courses periodically to support continuance of training capacity building at the local community level. The Person Centered Planning course was developed specifically through CYFCP and is offered periodically as well.
