Introduction to Child and Family Teams: A Cross System Training from the Family’s Perspective: This is a two-day experiential training developed in partnership with families in North Carolina. The goal is to provide an overview of Child and Family Team meetings from the family’s perspective.
Families, through focus groups and through direct involvement in curriculum writing, provided essential guidance in the development of this training. The training is grounded in their knowledge and experience, especially regarding how to make Child and Family Teams a successful way to support the active involvement of families, children and youth in planning for the family.
This training seeks to reinforce the idea of “one family, one plan” by addressing Child and Family Teams through the lens of multiple systems as they affect families in their everyday lives. A variety of systems that work with children, youth and families are encouraged and invited to attend. This includes, but is not limited to those working in: mental health, social services, juvenile justice and the school system.
Participants should come ready to be actively engaged in the process for two full days. The majority of the training will be presented through the experience of a mock Child and Family Team meeting. At various times throughout the training, participants will serve as members of the meeting process and as observers of the meeting process. Trainers will provide opportunities for connection, introspection, conversation and exploration about how to best bring families to the table.
Objectives: Encourage and reinforce the family perspective in all of our work;
Experience a generic Child and Family Team simulation from different perspectives, e.g. as a family member, as a professional, as an observer.; Understand how we can better support families in the Child and Family Team process, i.e., before, during, and after meetings.

Person Centered Planning: A Child and Family Team Approach: With Mental Health Reform, Person Centered Planning became the endorsed approach to treatment planning and the expectation for all those consumers that receive enhanced services through Mental Health, Developmental Disabilities and Substance Abuse Services in North Carolina. Person Centered Thinking is the backbone of the planning process and this approach creates an environment where children, families and adults are the “drivers” of the planning practice.
As System of Care principles were introduced into North Carolina’s mental health system, Child and Family Services across the state began to do business differently. They began to learn how to create working teams, include families and youth as the “drivers” of their team meetings and started to collaborate around numerous challenging issues in their systems. Person Centered Thinking provides a context for System of Care and Child and Family Team practice. It illustrates best practice for planning and supports Child and Family Team planning process.
This particular 3-day curriculum combines the Person Centered Thinking philosophy and Person Centered Planning with Child and Family Team practice. Child and Family Team practice reflects the elements of Person Centered Thinking and Planning and this curriculum has been designed to be the bridge between the two practices as both continue to grow across the state of North Carolina.
Certificates will be provided to those participants who attend this training in full providing evidence of six hours training credit for Person Centered Thinking and five hours for in other topics related to services and population being served. No portion of the training can be missed in order to receive a certificate.
