Vision, Values & History

Vision

The vision of the Center is to engage partnerships to move toward a more just society in which respect and cooperation are the dominant unifying values and that sufficient opportunities are available for children, youth, and families in all communities to fulfill their potential and contribute to the well being of others.

Values

Several cornerstone values guide the Center’s work:

  • Active involvement of multiple stakeholders who represent a diversity of perspectives
  • Healthy, open, respectful, and constructive relationships among stakeholders
  • Programs and strategies informed by the best available research and youth, family, and community wisdom
  • Programs and policies in support of children that are individualized, asset-based, developmentally appropriate, and culturally sensitive

History

The Center was established in 1996 to encourage interdisciplinary research and to utilize the resources of the University to address issues in the community. The Center is funded primarily through a diverse portfolio of federal, state, local and foundation grants and contracts. It is located within the Office of Research and Economic Development. As such, our role is to advance the research and outreach vision and mission of the University, to build social capital, and to enhance the visibility of UNCG’s research enterprise.
