Section Initiatives/Project Names/Brief Description

  • Adolescent Development Follow-Up Project-The major goals of this 15-year longitudinal project funded by NIMH are to examine rates, predictors, and covariates over time of suicidal behaviors among 180 formerly psychiatrically hospitalized adolescents (now young adults).
  • Impact of Adolescent Hospitalization on Parents Study-The goal of this NIMH funded project is to examine the emotional and behavioral reactions among 144 mothers of suicidal teens relative to 144 mothers of other hospitalized youths for a 1 year period following the youths’ discharge from psychiatric hospitalization using repeated assessments and both quantitative and qualitative methods.

  • Cognitive-Behavior Therapy and Relapse Prevention for Youth with Depression, Suicidal Behaviors, and Substance Abuse Problems-This NIMH project is a pilot randomized controlled trial for evaluating the use of a cognitive-behavioral relapse prevention treatment (CBT-RP) for suicidal adolescents and young adults with comorbid depressive and substance abuse disorders.

  • Risk Factors for School Dropout Among Winston-Salem Forsyth County School Students-The goal of this collaborative project with the School Health Alliance of Forsyth County and the Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools is to develop a prediction model for high school dropout and to provide technical assistance to community agencies for developing and implementing dropout prevention initiatives based on identified risk factors. This initiative is funded by Kate B. Reynolds Foundation.

  •  School-Based Group Therapy Program-This project is a collaborative effort involving the CYFCP, Susan Dennison in the Department of Social Work at UNCG, and the School Health Alliance for Forsyth County. The goals of this project are to demonstrate the applicability, effectiveness, and feasibility of the Susan Dennison Group model for youth served in the school-based health center setting; to improve the mental health, academic performance, and self-sufficiency of children at risk for mental health problems; and to establish mechanisms to sustain this service delivery model in a school-based health center setting.

  • Evaluation of School-Based Health Centers in the Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools-This collaborative project with the School Health Alliance for Forsyth County evaluates and summarizes quantitative and qualitative mental health outcomes for students receiving services in five school-based health centers, and provides recommendations regarding program development based on student outcomes and the needs of both the schools at large and the school-based health centers.
  • Northwest Community Care Network Integrative Health Care Evaluation-This initiative provides evaluation and technical assistance for primary care pediatric and family medicine practices enrolled in the Northwest Community Care Network that employ an integrated behavioral health care model.
  • Protecting Farmworker Mental Health: A Pilot Intervention Study-The goal of this project is to examine the potential value of simple lay-advisor interventions (i.e., music instruction, English as second language) in reducing stress and depressive symptoms among Latino farmworkers.
