Master of Arts Graduates
Lori Britt
Lori Britt, MA, 2005, came to UNCG after a 20-year career in communication including journalism, public relations, non-profit management, and marketing. Her involvement as a community volunteer spurred an interest in how to improve the communication and work of community groups, and how community is formed. Her studies at Greensboro opened her eyes to the potential of dialogue and deliberation as tools to reengage people in making choices together.
She is continuing her studies at the University of Colorado Boulder where she is pursuing a PhD in Communication, focusing on how communication is a tool for building and maintaining community, and how better communication practices can be encouraged in community groups ranging from PTAs to city councils, and neighborhood associations.
She is involved in campus efforts to increase opportunities for students to combine engagement in the community with academic learning as a way for students to consider what it means to be a citizen in our pluralistic, democratic society. She hopes to encourage students to learn skills that will enable them to be active in the communities they are members of, and work towards solutions to many of society’s most challenging issues. She continues to study interaction in community groups and teach university students communication skills that can help them create the kind of communities, businesses, and relationships that can engage difference and empower positive change.
