Vaxjo, Sweden - Your Home
The city of Vaxjo (pronounced "Vex-sure" or "Vek-wa") has a population of 70,000 people. The area is known for its world class glassworks, including Kosta Boda and Orrefors. This is also the home of the international furniture manufacturer, IKEA. The city offers a full range of cultural and social opportunities, including a cathedral, a concert hall, theatre and museums. The idyllic setting of Vaxjo makes it a wonderful place to live and study.

Vaxjo University - Your Host
Vaxjo University is the major university in southeastern Sweden and is known for its integrated English-language programs. About 9,000 students attend Vaxjo University, including international students from such diverse areas as Scandinavia, Europe, the US, Japan, Australia and Africa.
The main campus includes not only Teleborg Castle and park, but also the new University Library and a newly renovated student union and pub. Modern student housing is located close to the classroom buildings and other facilities.

The VU International Studies Program - Your Choice
This is a full-semester program (mid-January to early June) which offers a unique opportunity to work on collaborative projects with culturally mixed groups of students. Coursework at Vaxjo University is designed on a "consecutive scheduling program." Only one course is taken at a time, and you are examined at the end of each individual course.
Courses have been selected carefully and designed to meet the graduation requirements here at UNCG in the departments of Communication Studies, International Studies, Anthropology and Sociology. You will focus on interdisciplinary ideas such as globalism, nationalism, regionalism, ethnicity, racism, immigration, intercultural communication and cultural expression.
You may earn 13 - 16 semester hours toward your BA degree. Four sequential courses comprise the curriculum:

Sociocultural Theory
An introduction to sociological and social psychological theories and research on the relationships between nature, culture, society and the individual.
(3 Semester Hours; 300-level Elective Course Equivalent; Sociology course equivalents determined separately)

Intercultural Interactions
An introduction to theories and research in communication and social psychology on the issue of intercultural interactions.
(3 Semester Hours; CST 300-level Elective Course equivalent; other course equivalents determined individually)

Cultural Analysis
Study of cultural analysis methodology, research methods, ethics and field research strategies.
(3 Semester Hours; CST 399 Equivalent; other course equivalents determined individually)

Field Work
Interculturally mixed groups of students will carry out a piece of comparative field-work in Europe with direct application of relevant theories and methods.
(4 Semester Hours; CST 412 Equivalent or CST 333 Equivalent; other course equivalents determined individually)

Swedish Language Study
If you like, you can also take a 45-hour course in basic Swedish language which will run parallel to your other coursework.

Orientation - Your Adventure Awaits
There is a mandatory pre-departure orientation program provided for all students accepted to the program. This program covers academic, administrative, financial and cultural information.

Housing
Most UNCG students live in single rooms in dormitories equipped with private bathrooms. There are communal kitchens on each floor. Your floormates may be Swedish students or other foreign students from around the world.CostsStaying abroad is cheaper than you may think!. The average cost for an in-state student for tuition, fees, room and board is approximately the same as a semester in residence at UNCG. There are, of course, some additional costs for airfare, passport, insurance, and local travel; however, financial aid can applied to meet these expenses. Additionally, the Office of International Programs offers special travel grants to students accepted to the program in Sweden (up to $800)!
This is a very inexpensive program. If you can afford to study at UNCG, you can afford to participate in this program.

Financial Aid
Most forms of financial aid, such as grants or loans for which you are eligible at UNCG, may be applied to the Vaxjo program. Veterans' benefits may also be applied.
Even if you are normally ineligible for financial aid, you should submit a financial aid application: you may find you are eligible for additional funding.
