Students Awarded

At the May 5th Honors Convocation, undergraduates Melinda Alston (Communication Studies major) & Bethany Barnes (Communication Studies & Psychology major) won the 2009 award for Top Undergraduate Research Project in the Humanities for their research entitled “’AfterWords’: Crafting Identity Through Holocaust Resettlement Narratives.”

This university-wide award recognizes the top undergraduate research across all disciplines in three categories: Humanities, Education/Social Sciences, and Science/Math.

The research team was recognized with award certificates and a $1,000 cash prize. Their faculty mentor is Dr. Roy Schwartzman. The research also will be presented at the Chancellor’s Community Partner Appreciation Breakfast on May 18.

In related news, the University of Southern California Shoah Foundation Institute Visual History Archive (founded by Steven Spielberg) will be flying Dr. Schwartzman to Los Angeles in March for their conference featuring research using the Holocaust testimonial archives.
