David E. Johnson Scholarship
David E. Johnson was an adult
student at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He began his studies
at UNCG at age 25 after an unproductive freshman year elsewhere while working a
series of entry-level jobs. At UNCG, he enrolled in Communication Studies and
earned a place in the Honors Program. Upon graduation in 1986, he continued
working for a communications company; however, in 1993, with a partner, he
started his own company, AmeriNet, of which he is
president. The proceeds from the endowed scholarship shall be used to fund an
undergraduate scholarship, with the following stipulations:
In the past, students have
received between $1,200-2,000 depending on the interest earned that year. Applicants
should submit a letter of application addressing merit in regard to the mission
statement of the Department of Communication Studies:
We research, teach, and practice communication to
cultivate the ethical voices of people that speak in critical, constructive,
and transformative ways to identities, relationships, and communities.
Applicants should address the
following areas in the letter:

What life
experiences led you to major in communication?
Ø
How does your
academic performance reflect the mission statement?
Ø
How does your
performance beyond the classroom reflect the mission statement?
Ø
How does the
mission statement inform your decisions about future, personal, and
professional goals and aspirations?
Letters should be 2-4 pages
in length. Attach a current official University transcript. The letter should
also include your current address so we can contact you when the decision is
made. The reception of your application will be notified by e-mail. If you do
not receive the notification at your UNCG e-mail address in two weeks from the
deadline, please contact Dr. Kinefuchi at e_kinefu@uncg.edu.
