Call for Applications for the 2012-2013 Academic Year
Kathryn McAllister England Scholarship In Communication Studies
Kathryn McAllister England taught drama and speech at UNCG from 1942 until her retirement in 1975. Throughout her career she maintained a commitment to uphold a high level of both scholarship and performance skills in oral communication. Following her death in 1977, friends and family began a drive to provide a scholarship fund to commemorate Professor England’s contribution to the department and to the field of speech communication. In the past, students have received between $600-800 per semester. More than one award may be given depending on the interest earned that year.
ELIGIBILITY: Anyone who meets the following criteria:
- A Communication Studies major with an upper division status (has completed several CST courses).
- You must be full-time during the semester(s) you receive the scholarship. If you graduate in December 2011, you may still apply as long as you are full-time in fall 2012.
- Grade point average of at least 3.0.
- Show promise in the speech communication field.
APPLICATION
- Submit a 2-page letter of application to Dr. Etsuko Kinefuchi via e-mail (e_kinefu@uncg.edu). The letter should articulate why you are a worthy applicant. Include a brief statement of educational background and career goals. Applicants may include information about honors received or professional recognition as evidence of promise in the communication field. Please indicate your graduation date in your letter.
- Submit a hard copy of a current unofficial University transcript to the Department by visiting Ferguson Building, Room 102 or mail it to:

- Both documents should be submitted by 5p.m., Monday, March 25, 2013. The reception of your application will be notified by e-mail. If you do not receive the notification at your UNCG e-mail address within a week from the deadline, please contact Dr. Kinefuchi at e_kinefu@uncg.edu. Questions should be directed to her as well.
The winner will be announced in mid-April.
David E. Johnson Scholarship
David E. Johnson was an adult student at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. He began his studies at UNCG at age 25 after an unproductive freshman year elsewhere while working a series of entry-level jobs. At UNCG, he enrolled in Communication Studies and earned a place in the Honors Program. Upon graduation in 1986, he continued working for a communications company; however, in 1993, with a partner, he started his own company, AmeriNet, of which he is president. The proceeds from the endowed scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate student based on merit. In the past, winners have received between $500-1,000 per semester depending on the interest earned that year.
ELIGIBILITY
- An adult (24 years old or older by the deadline), full-time (12 hours or more) Communication Studies major.
- Has completed 12 hours in the Department of Communication Studies at UNCG.
- A grade point average of 3.0 or better.
- Must be full-time during the semester(s) you receive the scholarship. If you graduate in December 2012, you may still apply as long as you are full-time in fall 2012.
APPLICATION

- What life experiences led you to major in communication?
- How does your academic performance reflect the mission statement?
- How does your performance beyond the classroom reflect the mission statement?
- How does the mission statement inform your decisions about future, personal, and professional goals and aspirations?
- Please indicate your graduation date in your letter.
