Course number RPM 438Credits: (6) Six credits – may be substituted for Practicum with Advisor Permission
Prerequisites: Therapeutic recreation concentration and 3.3 GPA Planned for: Undergraduate therapeutic recreation students interested in older adult practice who seek a travel abroad learning experience.

On Completion of this Course
On completion of this two-part course set that couples preparing and pre-trip training with service learning experiences in the teaching nursing home in Stavanger, Norway students will be able to:- Demonstrate a critical awareness and understanding of a socialized system of care as compared to the US system.
- Provide leadership in establishing a person centered therapeutic recreation program.
- Evaluate the impact of the therapeutic recreation program on older adult residents and staff in the teaching nursing home.
- Reflect on cultural differences in the care of frail older adults between Norway and the US.

Pre-Trip Outcomes
- An ability to apply knowledge of therapeutic recreation to geriatric settings.
- An ability to identify, formulate possible solutions, and solve service and training problems in the nursing home system
- An ability to design and conduct therapeutic programs using a person-centered approach.
- An ability to describe socialized geriatric care in comparison to the US system of care.
- An ability to design an evaluation method for one therapeutic intervention program.
- An ability to perform as an expertclinician the full therapeutic recreation process for one clinical problem area.
- A knowledge of professional leadership issues, such as modeling program delivery for others, assisting direct care staff in resident selection processes, and the interactions of person-centered program delivery and training professionals in executing a carry over project.
- An understanding of professional and ethical responsibility while visiting healthcare settings in another culture.
