Prerequisites: Therapeutic recreation concentration and 3.3 GPA Planned for: Undergraduate therapeutic recreation students interested in older adult practice who seek a travel abroad learning experience.

On Completion of this Course

On completion of this two-part course set that couples preparing and pre-trip training with service learning experiences in the teaching nursing home in Stavanger, Norway students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a critical awareness and understanding of a socialized system of care as compared to the US system.
  2. Provide leadership in establishing a person centered therapeutic recreation program.
  3. Evaluate the impact of the therapeutic recreation program on older adult residents and staff in the teaching nursing home.
  4. Reflect on cultural differences in the care of frail older adults between Norway and the US.

Pre-Trip Outcomes

  1. An ability to apply knowledge of therapeutic recreation to geriatric settings.
  2. An ability to identify, formulate possible solutions, and solve service and training problems in the nursing home system
  3. An ability to design and conduct therapeutic programs using a person-centered approach.
  4. An ability to describe socialized geriatric care in comparison to the US system of care.
  5. An ability to design an evaluation method for one therapeutic intervention program.
  6. An ability to perform as an expertclinician the full therapeutic recreation process for one clinical problem area.
  7. A knowledge of professional leadership issues, such as modeling program delivery for others, assisting direct care staff in resident selection processes, and the interactions of person-centered program delivery and training professionals in executing a carry over project.
  8. An understanding of professional and ethical responsibility while visiting healthcare settings in another culture.

Norwegian Trip Outcomes
