Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about the M.Ed. in Student Personnel Administration

  1. What is the profile of the successful M.Ed. applicant to your program?
Successful applicants typically have GRE verbal scores of 500+, GRE quantitative scores of 500+, and GRE writing scores of 4.0+. Successful applicants also have undergraduate GPAs of 3.0 or above (on a 4.0 scale). They have relevant experience in higher education through involvements as RAs, orientation assistants, student leaders, and so forth. Successful applicants provide letters from faculty members who know them well and can speak to their ability to be successful at graduate-level work and from student affairs professionals who can speak to their experiences and interest in the field.
  2. What is the minimum GRE score required for admission to the M.Ed. program?
The Department of Teacher Education and Higher Education does not have a minimum cut-off score. Admissions decisions are based on a variety of factors including GRE scores, undergraduate GPA, letters of recommendation, and a written statement of purpose. That being said, it is important to note that high GRE scores help to make an applicant competitive.
  3. Is admission to the M.Ed. program competitive?
Yes. We keep our M.Ed. cohorts relatively small (typically 12-15). Therefore, we are selective in our admissions process.
  4. What undergraduate major should I have to apply to your program?
There is no single major leading to a degree in student personnel or a career in student affairs. In fact, students come to the field from every undergraduate degree imaginable.
  5. What is the admissions deadline?
Application materials are due January 10 for admission the following fall semester. We admit students once per year; new M.Ed. students start in the fall.
  6. What can I do with a master’s degree in student personnel administration?
Graduates of our program go on to work in student affairs positions at community colleges, 4-year colleges, and universities. They hold positions in areas such as housing and residence life, orientation, student activities, multicultural affairs, and academic advising.
  7. Is there a part-time option?
Although the majority of our M.Ed. students attend full-time, it is possible to attend part-time. Typically courses are offered starting at 4:00 pm or later, which enables those employed full-time to attend.
  8. Are courses offered online?
A few courses are offered in hybrid formats. Hybrid formats combine the advantages of face-to-face interaction and online learning. A hybrid course will meet occasionally in a face-to-face format throughout the semester with the rest of the learning experience taking place online. However, most of our courses are offered in a traditional, face-to-face classroom-based format.
  9. Can I take courses before I am admitted to the program?
Yes. College graduates may take up to 9 credits as a VISIONS student. If the applicant is subsequently admitted to a program, these courses may be applied toward the degree provided that the courses taken through VISIONS are relevant to the course of study. Click here for more information about the VISIONS program.
  10. What kind of funding is available? Are there graduate assistantships?
Most of our full-time master’s students hold graduate assistantships in student affairs offices here at UNCG. Information about scholarships and other financial aid is available from the Financial Aid office.
  11. How do I apply for graduate assistantships?
Each spring sometime between mid-February and mid-March we hold SPARK (Student Personnel Administration Recruitment Kickoff), a two-day program where students admitted to the program interview for assistantships. Click here for more information about SPARK.
