Master of Education in Student Personnel Administration in Higher Education

The M.Ed. in Student Personnel Administration in Higher Education prepares entry-level college student educators to implement holistic, transformative, and integrated learning experiences in colleges, universities, and other postsecondary settings. In preparation for careers in college student personnel administration, graduate learners complete a minimum of 42 credits in foundational studies, professional studies, assessment and research, and a coherent sequence of supporting courses. The 42-credit requirement also includes an internship in college student personnel administration. Graduates may select supporting courses for an emphasis on adult learning.

A.Foundational Studies (9 hours)

  • HED 601 - Foundations of College Student Personnel Administration (3)
  • HED 661 - Higher Education in the U.S. (3)
  • One of the following:
    ELC 604 - Moral Dimensions of Education (3)
    ELC 661 - Ethics in Education (3)
    ELC 696 - Philosophies in Education (3)

B.Professional Studies (18 hours)

  • HED 602 - Theoretical Foundations of Higher Learning (3)
  • HED 688 - Social Justice in Higher Education (3)
  • HED 606 - Administration in Higher Education (3)
  • HED 600 - The Community College
  • HED 627 - Enrollment Management (3)
  • One course in learning interventions, selected in consultation with advisor, such as HED 663 - Planning Programs in Postsecondary Education (3)

C.Assessment and Research (3 hours)

  • ERM 604 - Methods of Educational Research (3)

D.Internship (3 hours)

  • HED 690 -Internship in Higher Education (3)

E.Supporting courses (9 hours)

  • Degree candidates should select a coherent sequence of courses in consultation with the advisor and file a plan of study after taking 9 hours of coursework. Download a copy of the Plan of Study at this link.

F.Comprehensive Examination

Admissions information

Application materials must be submitted online to the Graduate School. For information on general graduate admissions, cost of attendance, and frequently asked questions, visit the Graduate Admissions site.
Application Process:

  • Apply online through the UNCG Graduate School website where you can find additional information.
  • Graduate School Bulletin
  • You will need one official transcript from every college and university you have attended, including UNCG.
  • Three recommendations are required from former professors and employers. These can be completed online or submitted in sealed envelopes.
  • A Residency Statement is required for applicants claiming North Carolina residency. 
  • Applicants must take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and submit their test scores to the Graduate School. These should not be more than five years old.
  • Applicants for this program are required to submit a personal statement and a copy of an updated resume. The personal statement should articulate specific reasons for pursuing a graduate degree in student personnel administration in higher education.

For best consideration all of the above application materials listed above must be received by the Graduate School by January 1st for admission to the next Fall cohort beginning every August.
