ESL Concentration
Teacher Leadership Track
Mission Statement:
Our mission is to prepare outstanding teachers for students who are learning
English as a second language in K-12 public schools in North Carolina.
We facilitate the development of teachers’ professional and personal knowledge,
skills, and dispositions through reflection and encourage action in the
community setting. We also provide continuing professional development
to all teachers regarding issues and topics relating to English language
learners and their families.
Graduates of our programs:
- Apply their understanding of linguistic principles and knowledge
of language development to their instruction;
- Become aware of the socio-cultural issues impacting language learning;
- Enhance students’ acquisition of both social and academic English;
- Support students’ first language development;
- Integrate the teaching of language and content;
- Serve as the link between school and home to facilitate student development;
- Collaborate with other professionals to support English language
learners and the community;
- Advocate for language minority students and promote social justice
Designed for:
Students with an undergraduate degree and an initial licensure for teaching
any subject area who want to work with English Language Learners (ELLs)
in the K-12 context. The program leads to the M.Ed. in ESL and advanced
licensure in North Carolina.
Program Description:
The Master of Education (Teacher Leadership Track) program can be taken
on full-time or part-time basis. The program is aligned with the North
Carolina Advanced Competency Standards and the National Board for Professional
Teaching Standards. A culminating portfolio based on these sets of standards
is required. The program is oriented toward improving results in teaching
practice, as well as gaining critical knowledge, skills, and dispositions
in action research, professional development, leadership and working successfully
with ELLs in a K-12 context.
Application Process:
- Applicants can obtain an application from the Graduate School.
- Two official transcripts are required from every college and university attended.
- Three recommendations (forms available at http://www.uncg.edu/grs/prospective/forms.html) are also required, and should be submitted in sealed envelopes.
- A Residency Statement is required for applicants claiming North
Carolina residency.
- Applicants must take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and submit their test scores to the Graduate School.
- Applicants are required to submit a personal statement and a copy of an updated resume.

Pre-requisites/Co-requisites:
- Bachelor's degree
- Initial licensure for teaching
- Two years teaching experience
- Documented evidence of having studied a foreign language
Curriculum:
Core: (9 hours)

- TED 646 (3) Introduction to Equity Education
- ERM 605 (3) Educational Measurement & Evaluation or approved substitute
Pedagogical Expertise: (18 hours)
- TED 523 (3) Legal, Historical and Cultural Implications of English as a
Second Language
- TED 603 (3) Literacy Instruction for English Language Learners w/ practicum
- TED 604 (3) Applied Linguistics
- TED 618 (3) Teaching English as a Second Language w/ practicum
- 6 hrs electives with approved Plan of Study to include literacy courses
such as TED 614, TED 615, TED 616 or TED 640
Professional Development/Leadership: (12 hours )
- TED 628 (3) Trends & Issues in Curriculum & Instruction or ELC
697 (3) Selected Critical Issues in American Education or approved substitute
- TED 656 (3) Teacher as Leader
- TED 675 (6) Teacher As Researcher (to be taken as two separate courses during Fall and Spring of final year)
Licensure Process:
- Completion of Program of Study
- Successful completion of ESL PRAXIS exam
- Successful completion of Advanced Competencies Portfolio
- Application for licensure through UNCG Certification Officer.
