Classroom Practice Track
Mission Statement:
Our mission is to prepare outstanding teachers for students who are learning
English as a second language in K-12 public schools in North Carolina.
We facilitate the development of teachers’ professional and personal knowledge,
skills, and dispositions through reflection and encourage action in the
community setting. We also provide continuing professional development
to all teachers regarding issues and topics relating to English language
learners and their families.
Graduates of our programs:
• Apply their understanding of linguistic principles and knowledge
of language development to their instruction;
• Become aware of the socio-cultural issues impacting language learning;
• Enhance students’ acquisition of both social and academic English;
• Support students’ first language development;
• Integrate the teaching of language and content;
• Serve as the link between school and home to facilitate student development;
• Collaborate with other professionals to support English language
learners and the community;
• Advocate for language minority students and promote social justice
Designed for:
Students with an undergraduate degree (other than education) who wish to pursue a combined Masters degree in education and ESL teaching licensure for grades K-12.
Program Description:
The M.Ed. in ESL-Classroom Practice Track program is a full-time cohort (team) based program with new groups of students starting each January and continuing through May of the following year. Students participate in evening courses three times a week at UNCG and complete 10 hours of field-based internships in K-12 settings in Asheboro City Schools during the first Spring and Fall semester, and attend both summer sessions before student teaching full-time during the final Spring semester. Graduates earn a Master of Education with a concentration in English as a Second Language (ESL) and are recommended for licensure to teach ESL in grades K-12.

Applicants can obtain an application from the Graduate School.

Two official transcripts are required from every college and university attended.

Three recommendations (forms available at http://www.uncg.edu/grs/prospective/forms.html)
are also required, and should be submitted in sealed envelopes.

A Residency Statement is required for applicants claiming North
Carolina residency.

Applicants must take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and submit their
test scores to the Graduate School .

updated resume.

Licensure Process:
- Successful completion of all courses in the Program of Study and successful completion of internships and student teaching in K-12 settings.
- Successful completion of Advanced Competencies Portfolio (AC) Teaching and NETS Technology Portfolio.
- Acceptable scores on required PRAXIS II ESL exam.
- Application for licensure through UNCG Certification Officer.

Frequently Asked Questions:
Can I attend part time?
No, the program is a full-time, intensive course of study. Clinical (internship) experience is required in all courses during the day. Coursework spans daytime and evening hours at least 3 days a week.
What type of school experience will I get?
In addition to taking coursework, you will have an internship in an elementary school and a middle/high school for ten hours a week during the first and third semester of the programs and a full-time student teaching experience during your last semester (15 weeks). You will also have practicum experiences in a variety of K-12 settings required as part of CUI 603 and CUI 618.
I already have a lateral entry job and just need a couple of courses - is this the right program?
No, this is a full-time program with courses and internships required during the day.
Is there any financial assistance for this program?
Yes, up 15 students may receive a stipend of $800 each Fall and Spring semester (total of $2400) from a U.S. Dept. of Education grant supporting this program until 2012. The application deadline is November 1st, but you should apply early.
Can I choose my internship or student teaching school?
No, the university uses school partners. You are able to state preferences for grade level placements during student teaching, but you are assigned to specific school placements.
Can I take extra courses to finish early?
No, the program is structured for a spring , summer, fall and spring rotation. You must take courses in sequence with the cohort.
Do I have the summer off?
No, You will have a full load of courses in the summer also. There are two required courses during each summer session.
Other than classes and the internship, are there other requirements?
Yes. Reflections and lesson plans related to the internship, along with a Teaching Portfolio will be completed.
