Instructional Technology

Teacher Leadership Track

Designed for:

Students with an undergraduate degree in education or a related field and an initial ("A") license for teaching.

Program Description:

The Master of Education Teacher Leadership Track with a concentration in Instructional Technology can be taken on a full-time or part-time basis. The program is aligned with the North Carolina Advanced Competencies for Master Teachers (AC), the NC DPI 077 licensure requirements (Instructional Technology Specialist-Computers), Advanced Program Standards for Technology Leadership as defined by the International Society for Technology Education (ISTE), and the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS). A culminating portfolio based on these sets of standards is required. The program is oriented toward improving results in teaching practice; gaining critical knowledge, skills, and dispositions in action research, professional development, and leadership; and working successfully with diverse learners in our schools. Specific skill areas for technology leadership include: an in-depth understanding of computer technoloty (hardware, courseware, and information resources), the ability to manage a computer skill instructional program, the ability to effectively integrate technology into an instructional program, the ability to design instruction using technology, and the ability to manage computer resources.

Students may apply for admission to the M.Ed. in CUI with a concentration in Instructional Technology. Upon admission, the student will be advised to take the core courses required for all M.Ed. programs prior to taking the IT concentration courses. The student will be advised to take the Professional Development/Leadership courses during the last year of coursework and to complete the M.Ed. Portfolio at this time. The IT Concentration Coordinator (the LIS Department) will be responsible for advisement on issues related to the joint concentration courses and the Supervised practicum (CUI 644). All other advisement and all admissions will be done at the CUI Department.

Application Process:

  • Applicants can obtain an application from the Graduate School.
  • Two official transcripts are required from every college and university that you attended.
  • Three recommendations are also required, and should be submitted in sealed envelopes.
  • A Residency Statement is required for applicants claiming North Carolina residency.
  • Applicants must take the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) and submit their test scores to the Graduate School.
  • Applicants are required to submit a personal statement and a copy of an updated resume.

Pre-requisites/Co-requisites:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Initial or "A" license for teaching
  • Two years teaching experience

  • TED 610 (3) Integrating Technology into Subject Matter Instruction, or TED 628 (during summer session), or approved substitute
  • TED 644 (3) Supervised Practicum in Curriculum and Instruction
  • TED/LIS 672 (3) Instructional Design
  • LIS 616 (3) Media Production Services for Library Programs
  • LIS 647 (3) Emerging Technological Trends in Information Access
  • LIS 648 (3) Managing School/Library Computer Laboratories (3) or LIS 65 (3) Computer-Related Technologies for Library Management
  • SES 662 (3) Assistive Technology for Inclusive Education

Professional Development/Leadership: (9 hours)

  • TED 656 (3) Teacher As Leader (taken during final Spring semester)
  • TED 675 (3) Teacher As Researcher (one semester, Fall only)
  • TED/LIS 674 (3) Seminar: Issues and The Electronic Community or TED 628 (3) Trends & Issues in Curriculum & Instruction or ELC 697 (3) Selected Critical Issues in American Education or approved substitute

Licensure Process:

  • Completion of Program of Study.
  • Successful completion of Advanced Competencies Portfolio* and/or an Assessment Day Experience*.
  • Application for licensure through NC SDPI or UNCG Certification Officer.

*Note: UNCG and this program of study support the Advanced Competency and NBPTS process, but neither UNCG nor TED can assure successful certification or licensure.
