Reading Concentration

Reading Add-On Licensure

The add-on program in reading is designed for professionals who have already completed a masters program in education or who are currently enrolled in a masters program and would like additional licensure as a reading specialist. The program requires 18 hours of course work in literacy at the masters level. Some of these hours may be completed as part of another masters program such as those offered by the Department of Curriculum and Instruction or the Department of Specialized Educational Services.

Admission Process

  • Currently enrolled graduate students seeking a Reading Add-on who apply to the add-on licensure program before completion of their masters degree do not have to reapply to the Graduate School and pay the admission fee. Such students should consult with Dr. Francine Johnston who will forward the request to the Graduate School.
  • Licensed teachers seeking additional licensure as a reading specialist who are not currently enrolled in a masters program must have completed a masters in education either at UNCG or elsewhere. They must apply to the UNCG Graduate School and be accepted to the Reading Add-on Licensure Program. Applications and requirements are available online at http://www.uncg.edu/grs and by calling the Graduate School at 336-334-5596 .
