Welcome to mathematics education at UNCG. As part of the Department of Teacher Education and Higher Education in the School of Education, we established this site to reach out to the mathematics education community and educators in general. It is our intention to provide our program information, research findings, and resources related to teacher education for those interested in teaching and learning K-12 mathematics.
We are:
Sarah Burke Berenson (Sally) is the Yopp Distinguished Professor of Mathematics Education. Dr. Berenson was a professor of mathematics education and director of the Center for Research in Mathematics and Science Education at North Carolina State University for 22 years. The University's Board of Trustees recognized her scholarly contributions in 2005, when they awarded Dr. Berenson the Alexander Quarles Holladay Medal of Excellence. Her research interests center around the preparation of teachers, student's growth of algebraic understanding, and learning related to multiplicative thinking. As principal investigator and funded by the National Science Foundation, she is conducting an 11-year longitudinal of young women who were high achievers in middle school and high school mathematics.
A former middle school teacher and educational consultant, Dr. Berenson and her husband raised four children before she received her PhD in mathematics and computer education at The Florida State University. In her spare time she enjoys her six grandchildren, painting, and traveling.
Kerri Richardson is an assistant professor of elementary and middle grades mathematics education with a Ph.D. in Instructional Leadership and Academic Curriculum from the University of Oklahoma. She was awarded the 2006-2007 School of Education Teaching Excellence Award and her research interests include early algebra, spatial instruction, and problem solving.
Prior to pursing her graduate work, Dr. Richardson taught at both the elementary and middle grades levels in Norman, Oklahoma where she lived for fourteen years. She currently lives in Greensboro with her husband and two daughters and loves the outdoors.
