1. Make sure that you are in the degree program you wish to be in.
The choices are:
-BFA in Choreography and Performance (requires 128 credits overall, 78 in Dance, including a minimum 2.75 gpa and at least a B+ in 400-level contemporary dance technique. Only BFA students may take DCE 470, which involves having a piece produced in the Senior BFA concert.)
-BA in Dance/Dance Studies (requires 122 credits overall, 45 in Dance, including at least one credit of 300-level dance technique.)
Not sure which program you want? Read the Careers section of this Handbook, and talk with the faculty about options! (If you are interested in preparing for public school teaching, see Melinda Waegerle.)
If when you look up your transcript in UNC Genie the wrong program comes up, see Sue Stinson (220C HHP) asap!
2. Find out when your Registration window opens. (Go to UNCGenie, and sign in as you usually do. Click on Registration, and then click on Registration status.) You need to do everything below before you register.
3. Get a NEW degree audit through UNCGENIE. It should include the courses you are taking this semester. Check to see if you have any outstanding Incompletes or F’s that you didn’t know about.
Looking at the requirements you have NOT met, create a sample Plan of Study (or revise your current one to make sure it is accurate and up-to-date). As you do so, keep the following sequences in mind; in general, there is only ONE section of each of these courses taught each year, in the semester indicated. Be aware that not taking (or not passing) a course by the time indicated will mean spending extra time to get your degree, and that planning to do Study Abroad may mean that you have to take courses sooner than indicated. (See Robin Gee early in your academic career if you plan to study abroad.)

Note: If you are a licensure student (entered by spring, 2007), you need to take some of these courses sooner. See Melinda Waegerle or Sue Stinson. Note: If you are preparing for public school teaching, see the Careers section of this Handbook for courses you need to take in addition to your major requirements.
4. Find out from your technique teachers what level of ballet and contemporary you are eligible for. Read the Departmental policies for technique registration (online on the Department web site, updated for each semester), and note that failure to follow restrictions indicated will cause you to be dropped from your technique classes. It is YOUR responsibility to follow these policies.
5. Look at the courses on Your own program of study that you need to take this semester. Look at class times posted on UNCGenie. Make a tentative class schedule, working around the times of the courses in your major that you need to take this semester and the technique classes you are eligible for. (Although most majors take 2 credits of contemporary and 1 credit of ballet each semester, this is not required. See the University bulletin for specific technique requirements for your degree.)
6. Schedule an appointment with your advisor. Don’t wait until the day before your Registration window opens, since your advisor may not be able to see you right away. Try to go in the two week period before preregistration starts, or else in the first week of preregistration. Take all your advising materials with you to your appointment: a) latest degree audit, b) your Plan of Study, and c) your proposed schedule for the upcoming semester. (Most advisors will not meet with you unless you bring all of these with you.)
Advisor assignments 08-09: The Department is in the process of changing advisor assignments so that most students who start with an advisor will stay with the same advisor from the time they are admitted to the major until graduation. The Department will make advisor assignments each year and adjust them if necessary before the formal advising period. Check on UNCGenie to see who your assigned advisor is.
7. Registration:
Your Registration window opens at 12:01am. Because many classes fill up quickly, many students stay up to register as soon as possible. If you were hoping for a class that is full, know that some places may become available later if students withdraw. (If you do not get into the technique classes you think you need, check the technique enrollment policy to see if you are eligible for an appeal.)
8.Other:
a. If you have another major, you should see both advisors each semester.
b. Every Department makes changes annually, such as changes in sequences, prerequisites, and other important things that can affect your progress. Check your UNCG email for messages from the Department Blackboard organization.
c. Do not plan to take DCE courses at UNCG during the summer; although they may be offered, you cannot plan this until they are on the schedule. Unless you plan to attend a summer dance program elsewhere, plan GEC and free elective courses for summer. If a DCE course you need is available at UNCG, you can always add it on. (If going to ADF is in your plans, normally you can earn only 4 credits, 3 of them in technique, during one summer.)
