I came to Lees-McRae College after graduating in 1990 to start a dance program. Much was learned about trying to develop a traditional dance major within a predominantly musical theatre program within a small liberal arts college and in the rural mountains of western NC. The projects completed in my curriculum, history, phenom, and dance comp class at UNCG were implemented immediately! I was the only full-time dance faculty then, and I still am now! Our dance program lasted for 12 years before we had to delete the major; the dance program continued with classes, a few guest artists, performances, field trips, etc.
My graduates have all done exceptionally well. One would not suspect that students coming from such a small program and limited resources could excel so productively. A couple of students have gone on to graduate programs, one is the artistic director of his own company in WVA, two teach dance education part-time in public schools, a few stage manage for dance companies and operas, a handful are working in arts management, and the remaining dance graduates own and/or work in dance studios or cultural arts centers. I contribute this to the balance between their training in arts education, liberal arts education, small faculty-student ratio, and a focus in dance.
Currently, I do more administrative work, serving as the Assistant Chair and Program Coordinator for the Division of Performing Arts. Assessments and report-writing galore!!!! While I still direct the dance program, the focus is to train integrated performing artists. I'm excited to be working on a museum project at the National Museum of Dance, where I serve as project coordinator and co-curator. The focus of the exhibit is "Dance Education in America."
