The Department of Dance requires an audition for all prospective undergraduate dance majors.
(If you are interested in minoring in dance, visit the Dance Minor page. An audition is not required for the minor.)
Our next audition will be :
April 3, 2010
(deadline for registration: March 26, 2010)
International Students Interested in Becoming a Dance Major, Who Are Unable to Attend the Audition
The Department maintains its conviction that the dance world needs many different kinds of professionals, and its appreciation for the diverse backgrounds and career goals of dance students. With this in mind, the Department's process will include opportunities for students to show us their strengths and passion in three different activities:
Technical and artistic skills in contemporary and ballet will be assessed through a two-hour audition class. Faculty evaluators will look for dancers' alignment, use of strength and flexibility, and their ability to learn and perform exercises and combinations. Particular attention will be placed on dancers' sense of rhythm, spatial clarity, and the ability not just to learn movement, but to perform it as well.
Students will participate in a 75-minute writing workshop during which they will draft, edit, and revise a short essay to submit to the Dance Department. Basic writing mechanics and organization/clarity of ideas will be assessed.
Faculty members will interview small groups (5-6) of students. This process provides participants the opportunity to meet faculty, discuss educational, artistic, and career aspirations, and to express their relationship with dance and dance-related subjects.
Students are strongly encouraged to secure admission to UNCG before their audition date. We will allow you to attend auditions without secure admission to UNCG, but your audition results will be pending official University admission.
Students cannot be admitted to the Department prior to being admitted to the University. In addition, our auditions results do not in any way influence the decision of Undergraduate Admissions.
Freshman: Mar 1(FALL), Dec 1 (SPRING)
Transfers: Aug 1(FALL) Dec 1 (SPRING)
Please contact Undergraduate Admissions at (336) 334-5243 with any questions regarding UNCG admissions.
We want to be sure that the audition process gives each student the opportunity to show his or her strengths and special interests in relation to dance. If you have strength in a dance form that is not part of the audition process and want to share that with us as we make admission decisions, we invite you to bring a VHS tape/DVD (clearly labeled with your name, containing only TWO MINUTES of your dancing that is easily visible).
The auditions will be held in the HHP Building on campus. Parents are welcome to attend the information session at 9:00am, but space does not permit their observation of the other audition activities.
Students do have the option of waiting to audition for the Department as a current UNCG student.
If you are a person with a disability needing accommodations, please contact the Dance Department at 336-334-5570, preferably a week prior to your audition date.
