(Dept. policy, 4/3/92)
1. Except in unusual circumstances, classes are taught every time as scheduled.
Except in emergency situations, an alternative assignment is given when
a class is cancelled.
2. Whenever you are not teaching a scheduled class, NOTIFY THE DANCE OFFICE
as soon as possible regarding what is happening instead. THIS IS EXTREMELY
IMPORTANT.
3. When you know in advance that you will not be able to teach a class,
make arrangements for someone to cover your class (unless the class is
being cancelled because of an alternative assignment). It is not the secretary's
responsibility to find a substitute. The person covering your class might
teach the class, show a video, etc.
4. If the person you wish to cover your class in your absence is not a
faculty member or TA at UNCG, he/she must be an approved substitute (must
be formally appointed by the Head of the Dance Department, via a letter.
The secretary has the form for doing this). This is extremely important
for liability purposes.
5. If an emergency arises leaving no alternative to cancellation of a
class, call the office and ask the secretary to put up a notice. (Do not
just leave a message and assume that the secretary will get the message.
If the secretary is not in, call someone else in the Department or call
the Dean’s Office at 334-5744.) Such emergency cancellations should
be rare. It is recommended that faculty members and TAs have a contingency
plan for emergencies (such as an alternative assignment for students).
6. Each faculty member and TA is asked to be willing to substitute for
others once a semester without compensation, assuming the request is reasonable
and possible. Beyond that, the person requesting the substitute is expected
to make arrangements for compensating the substitute.
7. Faculty and TAs should use discretion in terms of the number of their
absences and the reasons for them, keeping in mind the attendance policies
they have set for students. When we are not in class because we are extending
a vacation or because we have "too much to do," we are essentially
giving permission for students to make the same choices.
8. Re: cancellations due to weather: The University does not often cancel
classes due to bad weather. Listen to area radio and TV. stations for
announcements or call 334-4400. If bad weather prohibits you from teaching
a class when the University is still open, notify the Department Office
as indicated in #5 above. In the event that no one is in the Department
Office, notify the HHP School Office at 334-5744. If you live in an area
such that you may be unlikely to make it in even when the University is
open, it is recommended that you notify students in advance that you will
post an announcement on Blackboard and/or send an email message if you
cannot get in. It is particularly frustrating for students to have made
a risky effort to reach campus only to find that the class they were trying
to reach has been cancelled.
