It is Department policy that, even if students are doing satisfactory work, in almost all courses (including all technique sections), a mid-term grade must be given to all students with some comment on how to improve upon or maintain that grade. It is recommended that a grade be given prior to mid-term (before end of the withdrawal period) to students who would at that time receive a C- or lower.
Mid-term unsatisfactory grades and all final grades must be reported to
the Registration Center either on-line through UNCGenie. Just before advising
begins, you should receive a notice from the Department Head asking you
to report students about whom you have particular concerns. These students
will be discussed at an all-faculty/TA meeting. Please note the date by
which Unsatisfactory (mid-term) grades are due.
For final grades, be sure to read the information telling you when your
grades are due. Make a copy of the final grade sheet and leave it in the
box in the Department. The instructor-of-record will enter grades electronically.
If grades are not entered electronically, the instructor of record is
responsible for hand-carrying final grades to the Registration Center
and leaving a copy in the Department office. Do not send them through
campus mail.
Please be mindful of student privacy in returning papers with grades written
on them and in posting of grades. Fold and staple student papers so only
the name is visible, or return them in envelopes (a good way to recycle
envelopes). Instead of posting the final grade sheet (which violates the
student’s legal right to privacy of their educational record), it
is better to leave for each student a copy of the final evaluation with
a grade on it, folded and stapled for privacy. According to University
legal counsel, it is also illegal to use social security numbers to post
grades; you may assign code names or numbers as long as the students do
not end up in alphabetical order on the posted list.
If you make an error in giving a final grade, a grade change form is available
in the Office. It must be signed by the Department Head.
