Dance Department policy is under discussion and may be revised. Current policy
is as follows. If an undergraduate student is unable to complete work
for the semester for reasons beyond the student's control, a grade of
Incomplete should be given. (Students in technique classes who are unable
to participate in at least 80% of the classes due to injury or illness
should be given an Incomplete or advised to withdraw from the course.)
For all undergraduate students receiving an Incomplete, the Department
needs a record of what the student must do to remove the Incomplete and
what the student’s grade is thus far. It is most helpful to include
a copy of the grade criteria from the syllabus and what the student’s
grade is for each requirement completed. This information will be placed
in the student’s file.
In the event of an Incomplete in a technique class, the Department requires
an additional form, also available in the Office. (See Appendix 6). On
this form, you must note clearly how many classes must be made up. The
instructor and the student must sign this form, and the student must be
given a copy. (The original is placed in the student's file.) The following
semester, the student takes the form to the instructor in whose course
the classes will be made up (the student cannot be registered for credit
in the same class); that instructor documents that the required classes
have been made up, and signs the form. The form is then returned to the
original instructor (if available) or the Department Head, who files a
Grade Change form (available in the Office.)
Incompletes are to be removed within six months of the end of the semester
in which they were incurred. Under special circumstances, an extension
may be granted. New faculty, part-time faculty, and TAs who are considering
this possibility should contact the Department Head.
Incompletes for graduate students should be handled just as carefully,
but graduate students have more leeway as to reasons for an Incomplete,
and no official form must be filed. However, a memo should be placed in
the student's file in case the faculty member giving the Incomplete is
not at UNCG when the deadline for removal of Incomplete comes up.
